Howard Better's exhibit “In and Out of the Can” features thousands of 3-D can collage sculptures. Influenced by Better’s many years as a filmmaker and sourced from the artist’s collection of vintage comics, magazines, and newspapers; the exhibit evokes a contrast and conversation between mass-production and individuality. The series is hung from the ceiling with an accompanying pathway, creating an ethereal and film-like sequence of stories to view.
“At this point I have created about a thousand of these 3-D collages. The original labels are gone, but the idea of labels remains. Although the cans are actually empty, one considers what the contents might be. Each can is unique, and is best experienced by watching them spin so that they can be seen from all sides”.
